Racing on the beach at Laytown

first_imgLaytown 6.30Racing on the sandsATRTHE ORIGINAL ALL-WEATHER TRACKDidn’t we have a lovely time the day we went to Laytown. The annual racing on the sands takes place today at Laytown when the first race is at 4.20pm – hopefully when the tide is out.Racing at Laytown dates back to 1868 making today’s meeting the 146th and whilst a novelty meeting – it does bring in a some angles for punters to latch onto. All the races are run over either 6f or 7f and started by tape – so the ability to make a quick start is also a useful attribute. And then there’s the surface. Sand, not as in all-weather, as in sand, proper sand. Runners who have proven form at Laytown are worth supporting again – but the problem is that given they only race once a year there’s not too much Laytown form in the formbook. The interesting runner today for me is Mt Weather in the 6.30. He is the incredibly rare species of a DOUBLE course and distance winner having won this corresponding race twice and has also run well on his other appearances here.He is 1lb lower in the weights than when he won this last year and it would be no surprise to see him bounce back from the doldrums here at a venue he clearly enjoys. He’s around 8/1 which looks a solid each way proposition.STAR FORECAST(stake between 0.5 and 10 points)4 points each way MT WEATHER (6.30 Laytown)AWKWARDBlinding rays of light from a skyscraper in the City of London are being blamed for melting vehicles below it.Developers of 20 Fenchurch Street, better known as the “Walkie-Talkie” because of its distinctive shape, are investigating reports of the damaging glare, and a number of nearby car parking spaces have been suspended, say reports.Businessman Martin Lindsay said he was distraught when he returned to find his luxury Jaguar XJ saloon with warped panels along one side. The wing mirror and badge had also melted from the heat of the reflected sunlight, he claimed.“They’re going to have to think of something. I’m gutted. How can they let this continue?” he told City AM.last_img
