Mauger to coach Highlanders

first_imgThe Dunedin-based franchise confirmed Mauger as Tony Brown’s replacement at their headquarters on Tuesday morning. The 36-year-old has signed a three-year deal and beat out fellow Cantabrian Mark Hammett for the top job.Mauger, who played 46 tests and 89 Super games, signed on as an assistant coach in May, about a month before long-time Highlanders assistant coach Scott McLeod was confirmed as the All Blacks’ new defence coach.  Highlanders chief executive Roger Clark last week said McLeod’s departure meant the decision was a two-horse race between Mauger and former Hurricanes and Sunwolves coach Hammett. Mauger finished his playing career with Leicester (53 caps) in 2010, before returning home to New Zealand and assisting Canterbury’s NPC team. He went on to work as the Crusaders’ attack coach under Todd Blackadder between 2013-15, but left after the Crusaders missed the playoffs for the first time since 2011. He had a stint as Leicester’s head coach, but was sacked in March on the back of a frustrating campaign, which saw the English Premiership giants fail to progress from the pool stages of the European Champions Cup. Following Jamie Joseph’s and Brown’s departures to Japan, next season will be the third consecutive year the Highlanders have gone into a season with a new head coach. Mauger will be assisted by forwards coach Hammett, performance manager Jon Preston and assistant forwards coach Clarke Dermody. The Highlanders are advertising for a defence coach to replace McLeod.  Photo: HENRY BROWNE/REUTERS (Former Crusaders player and assistant caoch Aaron Mauger will coach the Highlanders next year).last_img read more

In Nesyri sign for Sevilla

first_imgThe Seville it has been done with the services of Youssef In Nesyri, 22-year-old Moroccan striker who militated in the Leganés, in a brilliant operation that, in the absence of officiality, is already closed. As AS has learned, the pickers have known about the intention of the ram today in the afternoon. Soon the contacts that have resulted in an agreement between clubs for Sevilla to pay, by way of transfer, the 20 million euros contained in its clause. If Leganés had refused, Sevilla had deposited them in LaLiga. The signing was almost irremediable.International with Morocco, sign for Five and a half years. It is planned that this Thursday travel to the Andalusian capital to pass medical examination and be presented throughout the day. The battering ram could play on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabéu. Where it will not be will be Friday in Butarque for the important derby against Getafe. A jump in his careerIn Nesyri He was very receptive from the outset to the proposal of Seville fundamentally by giving him the option of joining a great European football that will allow him to make a quality leap in his career. In addition, the economic proposal of the Nervión club was almost irrechazable. The player will charge in Seville between three and four times his salary in Leganés. To the south of the capital, he received around one million eurosSevilla was not the only club that showed interest in the Moroccan international. In the Premier League, Brighton, who already tried in summer, has insisted also now in his hiring. Goal reinforcementThe Andalusians are in need of a goal. Monchi, its sports director, had been combing the market for some time looking for alternatives, more now than Chicharito Hernández’s exit seems close. In Nesyri solves both problems. In what we have been in season, the battering ram He had added four goals and was untouchable for Javier Aguirre. Last year he achieved eleven goals between League and Cup.Its about Leganés historical top scorer in the top category with 13 goals in season and a half. Leganés signed him for 5.1 million euros in August 2018. With this sale it takes a surplus of 15 million euros and becomes the most expensive sale of the club ahead of Diego Rico (15 million to Bournemouth in 2018).last_img read more

“VAR is to be used”

first_imgHard match and important victory. We respect Sevilla, it’s a great team. It was a very even match, happy for the victory. We did a great second time. We have been closer to scoring the third one than them in the tie, but we must give them the credit they deserve. We knew how to suffer when we had to suffer and we took advantage of the opportunities. How did you see that De Jong 0-1 overridden by the VAR in the first part? Here, regarding the VAR, we say the same. It is a very useful tool. They asked him to see the play and made the decision. The VAR is to be used, to be used well. The final decision is from the referee, we have little to say. What we want is to be used. I there, in the decisions of the referees, I better not enter.Casemiro has been the key man.He has scored two goals as if he were a center forward of great category, the first with a brutal subtlety and then with a great header. He is a man very committed to the team, gives great performance and has helped us win the game. Very happy for him.He arrived very young, played in Castilla and is now indisputable. The players come very young and have to show personality and character to complete stages, if you demonstrate barriers and today is a fundamental man for the team. Today he has scored two goals, but in the midfield it is a support, it gives a totally vital balance.Madrid showed, above all, the ability to withstand the pull of Seville. They scored on an isolated play, the team was fine, but we made the 2-1 soon. The goals have an important psychological effect, both teams and the public. He gave us peace of mind and we managed the game better, Vinicius gave us a lot of depth and we generated chances, we could do the third. Overall, the players must be congratulated, he was a high level rival and overcame all difficulties.Jovic and Lucas, two very discussed players, have been the assistants …All players are important, each one does his mission. Jovic’s heel is a high class. It is true that then Casemiro strikes very well in the area and then finished with that subtle touch. And the center of Lucas Vázquez has been perfect.Have you talked to José Castro after the game?I have not seen him after the game.Madrid is on a roll …The team is very solid, very firm, with conviction. We are in good line and we have to take advantage of it, we know what football is like. Difficult moments will come, we have to be prepared, but if you get results the dynamics are positive and we have to extend it as much as we can.Now comes the Cup, against Unionists.Maximum respect for the rival and the competition. There will be eleven players who will present battle, it is a historical match for them and they will do their best to give themselves a joy. It is lawful, we must show concentration and see if with our ability we get the marker to reflect our superiority. We must fight like them. It’s 90 minutes, any details complicate the game and you have to be prepared. Let’s see the pitch, the weather … everything influences. We must have the right mindset.last_img read more

Óscar: “If we want to save ourselves, we must have this mentality”

first_imgThe Celtic technician He reviewed the highlights of his team’s draw at the Bernabéu in the ‘flash interview.Balance: “It has cost us a lot. You can’t get a good result here if you don’t leave everything. We had a plan and it worked out well.”The changes work: “I am very happy with them. In the second part we thought we needed to have more of the ball and it came out perfect.”Mental power to trace: “We have done an important psychological job since we have reached Celta. If we want to save ourselves, we must have this mentality of whether we have any blow we can overcome.”Joy: “Taking a point from the Bernabéu when few gave us the option of scoring is a great joy. We have to think about our matches.”Aspas is aware: “We talked about that during the week and he told me to be calm, but it’s normal that when you’re about to win at the Bernabéu … he has that character.”Moments later he appeared at a press conference. What does the point taste like?It tastes a lot, it is a point of character, of not falling apart. In the first part Madrid had possession, but Rubén did not have to stop. In the second we knew that they were going to go for the game, we had to endure, but in two oversights they have scored two goals. But the team has shown character to get out of the situation we are in. I want to give a lot of value to the players. Are you very happy for Denis and Mina?If much. They were playing less, but they train well and have helped, which is what we want. Let it be noticed when someone leaves the bench. We need everyone, they are quality players.Bale must have been expelled?Of assumptions I prefer not to speak, I don’t know what would have happened if it was the other way around. Nor would it have been a very decisive action. Why the change of Denis for Smolov?I have seen that the midfield had to be reinforced with people with personality, to combine. We were having trouble getting to Smolov. We wanted to populate the midfield.Have you seen Madrid fragile in defense?I always see Madrid well, you just have to see that Hazard was injured and Vinicius left. We played a very good game, we knew we had to make it perfect and it was almost perfect, because we conceded two goals. But it didn’t give me a feeling of being a fragile, weak team. How important is adding in a field like this?We already said that all points are important. Here few people believed that Celta was going to add up, it is a very large moral injection. We knew that they could be important players who have played despite being aware and that a direct rival is coming. The team has gone well from these three games against Valencia, Seville and Madrid …We have given a very good level to these three teams, in Valencia the result I do not think was very fair. What do you say to the fans?I am delighted to be here and one reason is the hobby, it has come knowing that it was a complicated field. They have supported us from the hotel. These people make us believe that this has a positive end, that we can save ourselves. What Hazard played changed the plan a lot?We did not expect it, more to Vinicius, a player of similar style. But the game plan has not changed, we anticipated that a player of that profile would play in the band. His changes were very offensive, and he introduced them when the Celtic was worse …Madrid was squeezing us a lot, it was a game plan thought and as soon as they tied us we had to get the team forward, hence the three offensive changes. We have remade ourselves well and we got a very good point.last_img read more

Getafe teaches football at Ajax

first_imgGoals1-0, 36 ‘: Deyverson, 2-0, 92 ‘: Kenedy If a few days ago Valencia lost 3-0 in the Coliseum without throwing once between the three sticks, Ajax suffered the same calamity. It should not hurt the tongue for praising a team, the Getafe, which annuls so emphatically two teams with endless possibilities. If professionals repeat again and again that teams are formed from back to front, why don’t you shout loudly that this Getafe is a team that nobody is able to blow your teeth?Bordalás knew how to minimize everyone who only a few months ago danced to Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, surprising with a modern, dynamic and enthusiastic football, the future said.Ajax was surpassed all the time. He was content to no longer bleed. Van de beek, which was exhibited at the Bernabeú and is on the agenda of Real Madrid as a reinforcement for the next season, was absolutely outdated, blurred before Maksimovic and Arambarri.Cucurella could make the 2-0 in the 74 ’, but he caught a changed leg. A cross shot from Huntelaar that went a meter out was the greatest danger of Ajax, already in the 85 ’. Kenedy, with the collaboration of a rebound in rival leg, gave the lace in the 90 ’. CardsReferee: Ruddy BuquetEdson Alvarez (35 ‘, Yellow) Djene (43 ‘, Yellow) Tagliaphic (53 ‘, Yellow) Babel (54 ‘, Yellow) Nyom (54 ‘, Yellow) Mathías Olivera (56 ‘, Yellow Ajax is historically one of the best soccer schools on the planet. Getafe taught Ajax football. Specifically, Bordalás to Ten Hag. In the game of strategies in which both coaches involved as if it were a chess board, the blue coach gave a checkmate to the Dutchman. When the UEFA draw stopped the crossing with Ajax, few gave a hard one for Getafe. Eliminating Ajax is now possible. Amsterdam is missing, but Ajax has the anguish, a four-time European Cup champion who came out rented by a smaller team?It happened in the 37th minute. Arambarri raised both arms to the sky. It is not known to which number of the catalog of tested plays that gesture belongs, but it was embroidered. Ajax wanted to surprise by advancing the defensive line twenty meters beyond its area. Ten Hag was looking for the blue players to be offside when the foul was thrown out. Bordalás, warned because minutes before the Dutch had already carried out the same strategy, ordered Arambarri to change the tactic and, instead of taking the foul directly, the Uruguayan opened the ball to the right wing, where Damián was alone, the other in charge of laboratory maneuvers. Damián did not put the ball to the center as expected but made a change of orientation with a shift to the other band, the left, where Olivera appeared without a mark. From Uruguayan to Uruguayan and he, first and without dropping the ball, put the ball in the penalty spot, where at that time he surprised Deyverson’s arrival alone. The Brazilian, also at the first touch, finished beating Varela. Bordalás 1, Ten Hag. 0.You will go to Bordalás with little games. For something, Getafe is the king of the strategy with the ball stopped (the one with the most goals scored in this specialty of all the clubs in the League). Deyverson, the surprise in the Bordalás lineup, justified his coach’s bet by scoring his first goal as a Getafe player.
