Three on a String: Bluegrass and more coming

first_imgSkip By The Penny Hoarder Troy falls to No. 13 Clemson Ryan had no intention of downplaying the tremendous honor the “Three” received in March, it’s just that “Three On A String” is more than just bluegrass.“I think the reason we were elected to the Alabama Bluegrass Hall of Fame is because we have taken bluegrass to places where it would not normally be played,” Ryan said. “We don’t actually advertise what we do as bluegrass. It’s more musical comedy. We do bluegrass in the concert – Bill Monroe, Doc Watson and Ralph Stanley — but we also do Big Band music, like Glenn Miller and we do some folk music – Bob Dylan’s ‘Don’t Think Twice’ for one.“Back in the 1970s, we had a traditional bluegrass band with five people playing the fiddle, mandolin, guitar, bass and banjo. After three or four years, we continued to play bluegrass in all our shows but not so much in the traditional sense and we added other music.” Book Nook to reopen Ryan said the skits bring variety to their “musical comedy” concerts“We have skits about high school and talk about things like pep rallies, senior proms and homecoming parade, things that most people can relate to,” he said. “What we do is light and a lot of fun.”Shadron Graham, Johnson Center for the Arts administrative assistant, said the “Three” are talented and experienced entertainers who know their business and want to share their good time show.“‘Three On A String’ is a hilariously funny, clean show that leaves the audience wanting more,” Graham said. “It will be a very entertaining show and we encourage everybody that enjoys music of different kinds – bluegrass, folk and Big Band – to join us for this great concert.”Tickets for “Three On A String” are $12 for adults and $10 for students and are available at the sponsoring Johnson Center for the Arts, 300 East Walnut Street, Troy.Tickets may also be purchased at the door but seating is limited. South Africa improves performance in annual Nation Brand Index

first_imgJohannesburg, Thursday 8 December 2016 – Brand South Africa today welcomed South Africa’s improved performance in the annual Nation Brand Index.  South Africa now stands at 35 of the 50 nations assessed.  This is an improvement of three places from the 2015 Nation Brand Index.Speaking about the results, Brand South Africa’s CEO Dr Kingsley Makhubela said, “South Africa’s improved performance can be attributed to improved perceptions of our governance, immigration and investment, and people.  This speaks directly to the work we are doing as a country in implementing the National Development Plan and programmes like Invest South Africa.”“In addition, our Nation Brand continues to be admired for our unspoiled natural beauty, with 13 nations ranking South Africa in the top 25 countries being assessed.  Moreover, we are recognised internationally for our efforts to preserve the environment.  In this regard, South Africa moved up 6 places to stand at 29th of 50 nations.  This resonates with the brand of the country as a good international citizen.“Our sporting prowess continues to impact positively on perceptions about the country.”“Furthermore, an increased desire of global citizens to live and work in South Africa, concern for equality in society, and academic reputation help drive the larger than average gains for South Africa’s Immigration and Investment reputation this year.”“As we conclude 2016, we can take pride in the strides our Nation Brand has made in its performance in this and the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index.  In both indices, we have seen South Africa build on improvements from previous years.  We can say with confidence that our country is going in the right direction as a globally competitive Nation Brand,” concluded Dr Makhubela.South Africa’s performance on the pillars of exports, culture, and tourism remains remains unchanged from 2015.Notes to the EditorThe NBISM measures the images of 50 nations with a randomised sample of 20,445 respondents. BJPs demand an insult to Bengal

first_imgKolkata: Trinamool Congress secretary general Partha Chatterjee on Saturday informed the Election Commission of India (ECI) delegation that the BJP’s demand of declaring all booths in Bengal ‘super sensitive’ is an insult to the people of the state where previous elections have been held peacefully.A delegation of the ECI led by Deputy Election Commissioner Sudip Jain held a meeting with all the political parties on Saturday. “Bengal has seen all-round development and the law and order situation in the state is peaceful. The BJP lacks organisation in the state and so are resorting to tricks and constantly pressing with the Election Commission that the law and order situation is a problem here,” Chatterjee told reporters after a TMC delegation led by party’s All India general secretary Subrata Bakshi met Jain at Bengal Chamber. Reiterating that the TMC wants free and fair election in the state, Chatterjee said the Opposition, particularly BJP, is trying to present a false and fabricated picture of the law and order situation in the state. He challenged the BJP to furnish documentary evidence of the Panchayat polls in which the latter had claimed there were incidents of violence. It may be mentioned that the Trinamool Mahila Congress has organised a two-day dharna on Rani Rashmoni Avenue that started from Friday on the same issue, stating that BJP has insulted Bengal by demanding declaration of all 77,000 odd booths in the state as ‘super sensitive’. “The Left Front has fielded candidates in only 25 seats while the Congress is still struggling. The BJP is luring those leaders who have become insignificant for the TMC,” Chatterjee said. The BJP delegation again pressed to declare all booths in the state ‘super sensitive’ while Congress leader Pradip Bhattacharjee urged to assign media observers ahead of the elections. Left Front leader Rabin Deb said the Election Commission has already implemented their demand and have made it clear that no civic volunteers in the state will be deployed on poll duties.last_img read more
